UP chairman killed in Satkhira drive

A union parishad chairman was killed in a clash between BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami activists and the joint forces in the Shikri field area under sadar upazila, Satkhira on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was one Anwarul Islam, Agodari union parishad chairman of sadar upazila.

Jamaat and BNP activists attacked them when the joint forces were conducting a drive around Shikri field in the afternoon.

Sources said the activists chucked brickbats targeting the joint forces triggering an all-out clash.

At one point of the altercation, around 2:15pm, the joint forces personnel opened fire to disperse the gathering crowd and managed to hit Anwarul in the process.

Sadar police station Office-in-Charge Enamul Hoque confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that Anwarul was killed in police firing. 

He said: "Anwarul was shot when the joint forces fired at the crowd to disperse them. The on-duty doctor declared him dead when we rushed him to Sadar Hospital."

Satkhira is a known stronghold of the Jamaat.

The joint forces of the paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh, elite force Rapid Action Battalion and police are currently conducting raids across the country in wake of the recent politically motivated violence.
