First Bangladeshi Idol gets bail in attempted murder case

Mong Uching Marma, the first Bangladeshi Idol, secured bail in an attempted murder case that had been lodged about a year ago.

The chief judicial magistrate's court in Bandarban gave the release order after a bail hearing yesterday.

Mong was accompanied by his lawyer Md Ikbal Karim when he arrived at the court of chief judicial magistrate Ramani Ranjan Chakma around noon.

Following the hearing, the court granted him a temporary exemption from personal appearance in court proceedings because of an impending tour of the accused.

His lawyer will go to court on his behalf till further notice, sources said.

Mong was charged with “attempted murder” and “drunken brawl” after an investigation into a clash between Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) and United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) about a year ago.

He had long been an active member of PCP, a student wing of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS). He rose to fame after becoming the first Bangladesh Idol on December 13 in the grand finale of the local version of the popular American reality television show franchise.

Hailing from Ujanipara neighbourhood in Bandarban, Mong is a student of Bandarban Government College and the lead vocalist of a band called Chikkhhok.
