One dies in Malibagh police-Shibir clash

A youth died during clashes between supporters of Islami Chhatra Shibir and law enforcers in the capital's Malibagh area on Sunday morning.

The clash took place ahead of the BNP's Dhaka March programme scheduled near their Nayapaltan headquarters.

The deceased was one Mansur, 23, a student of Banani's City University and allegedly a ward unit president of Islami Chhatra Shibir in Uttara.

A man, Monjur Ashik, claiming to be the brother of the deceased, said their father was Abdur Rahman and hailed from Chandpur.

Shibir supporters brought out a procession near Padma cinema hall in Chowdhurypara area around 11:30am, Sergeant Selim told the Dhaka Tribune.

Police intervened and clashes between the two groups ensued, he said. A Shibir man was injured at scene and was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Witnesses said the clashes continued for over half an hour with Shibir men pelting stones and crude bombs and the police retaliating with teargas shells.

They said that police fired some rounds at scene. But, it was not clear as to if those were rubber bullets. Five policemen were also said to have been hurt.

DMCH police outpost Officer-in-Charge Muzammel Haq said Mansur was declared dead after being brought to the hospital around 12:15pm.
