Christmas observed across country

Commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ the Christian community yesterday observed their biggest religious celebration across the country with full solemnity and festivities.

The Christians gathered at churches and took part in special prayers. The churches were decorated with Christmas trees and grandeur lighting.

Major hotels of the capital, including Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Ruposhi Bangla, Radisson Blue Water Garden, and Westin, organised parties featuring Christmas carols, games, dance and special meals. Some of the hotels organised special arrangements where Santa Claus has given special gifts to the crowding children.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition chief Khaleda Zia greeted members of the Christian community on the occasion and called for upholding the tradition of religious harmony.

To mark the day, Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and private television channels aired special programmes.

Outside the capital, Christian communities in Barisal, Sylhet and Chittagong also celebrated Christmas with colourful programmes, traditional feasts, prayers and illuminated decorations.

In Barisal, the occasion was celebrated amid tight security measures.

Churches were decorated with colourful lights and illuminated Christmas trees. Santa Claus distributed gifts to the children and family gatherings took place with regular Christmas Day feasts.

Md Shamsuddin, Barisal Metropolitan Police commissioner, said special security measures were taken in the city to ensure peaceful celebrations.
