DITF 2014 now to begin on Jan 11

The government has deferred the Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2014 by 10 days because of the political turmoil and likely sabotage ahead of the general election.

The commerce ministry disclosed the new date during a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon.

The 19th DITF fair will now take place in the capital's Sher-E-Bangla Nagar from January 11 instead of of January 1.

According to the press release, the ministry passed the order on the basis of the requests made by the participants of the trade fair.

Earlier, nearly 100 domestic and foreign participants had threatened not to participate in the DITF -2014 unless it is deferred beyond the general election.

Small businessmen have also decided to stop construction of pavilions and stalls for the month-long fair if there is no immediate announcement to defer the event.

Ministry sources suggest a large number of domestic and foreign participants of the DITF last week submitted applications to Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed in this regard.
