One dies in Satkhira clash

A person was killed and a bicycle mechanic was injured during a clash with the joint forces on Satkhira-Jessore road in Jhawdanga Bazaar, Satkhira Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning.

The deceased was one Hafizur Rahman, 25, son of Lokman Ali Dafadar, hailing from the village of Gobindakathi in the upazila.

Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Satkhira Sadar police station, confirmed the death to the Dhaka Tribune.

The injured, Haran Chandra Pal, was admitted to Kolarua Upazila Health Complex. He was later transferred to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Haran said: “Pickets were pelting stones at the joint forces in the Jhawdanga Bazaar area at 9:10am. They hurled crude bombs triggering an all-out clash between the two forces. In retaliation, the law enforcers opened fire leaving Azizul dead on the spot.”

Hafizur was an activist of Jamaat, claimed OC Nasir Uddin.

When contacted, Satkhira district unit Jamaat publicity secretary Azizur Rahman also claimed that Hafizul was a Jamaat supporter.

However, Jhawdanga Bazaar Committee Secretary Zahid Hasan told local journalists that Hafizul and his family are not involved in politics directly.

He added: “Hafizul was a van driver by profession and he was sitting in his van during the incident.”

Satkhira is a known stronghold of the Jamaat.

The joint forces of paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), elite force Rapid Action Battalion and police are currently conducting raids across the country in wake of the recent violence.
