EC to review law on AL’s plea on affidavits

The Election Commission will review the related law on Awami League’s request to stop publishing the affidavits submitted by candidates, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said.

“It is nothing new. The commission will review the law following the request made by the Awami League,” the CEC told journalists Monday evening.

Asked about the foreign observers’ refusal to oversee the January 5 elections, he said: “It is their [observers’] decision. Our local observers and journalists will be there to oversee the polls.”

After the European Union and the Commonwealth, the United States on Sunday said it would not send a delegation to observe the 10th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh slated for January 5.

On Sunday, a delegation of the Awami League’s election steering committee sat with the CEC and requested him not to publish the affidavits on its website.

Rakibuddin then said disclosure of the affidavits was mandatory as per the Representation of People Order (RPO).
