Helicopter ride for polls campaign

An Awami Leauge nominee for the upcoming national polls flew from Dhaka to Lakshmipur, his electoral constituency, on a helicopter Monday noon.

The visit, for the purpose of campaign ahead of January 5 polls, is a violation of electoral code of conduct. The violation was backed by a local municipality mayor.

Lakshmipur-1 constituency nomination holder from 14-party, Lion Abdul Awal, landed on the building of Ramganj municipality office building around 12:30pm.

Journalists swarmed the spot for photographs of the incident. But, they were fended off by Ramganj municipality Mayor Belayet Hossain.

But, when the Awami League leader was asked regarding the violation, he said: “It was the upazila Awami League president who came in the helicopter, I came with him.”

He admitted that he had arrived for campaign purposes.

The president in question is Mohammad Shahjahan Conductor, Ramganj upazila Awami League president and the chief polls coordinator of Abdul Awal.

Ramganj police Officer-in-Charge Jabedul Islam confirmed that Abdul Awal was due in Ramganj on Monday.

Assitant returning officer of the area Gazi Mahbubul Alam said he was aware of the violation and that "adequate measures will be taken."
