Speaker: Pakistan’s resolution unacceptable

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury called the resolution adopted by Pakistan parliament on war convicted Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla execution “unacceptable” and “unexpected”.

She made the comment while speaking to journalists after a function held at the National Museum auditorium in the capital on Sunday.

“The war crimes verdict was executed following all legal procedures. There is no scope for any country or quarter to condemn (the execution) and it is unacceptable and unexpected”, Sharmin said.

War crimes convict Molla was executed on December 12 for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

Four days after the execution, Pakistan’s National Assembly adopted the resolution condemning Quader Molla’s hanging, sparking widespread protests across Bangladesh.

Foreign ministry of Bangladesh summoned the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka and sought an explanation over the resolution.

Ganajagaran Mancha -- a youth movement -- has been staging protests condemning Pakistan’s resolution on the Molla execution.

They marched to the Pakistan High Commission offices in Dhaka and submitted a memorandum to the ministry of foreign affairs and a note of protest to the ministry of home affairs demanding all foreign relations with Pakistan be severed.

They also urged the countrymen to boycott all Pakistani products.

Apart from Ganajagaran Mancha, many political and social organisations protested Pakistan’s move by burning its national flag and the effigies of several leaders of that country.

On Friday, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s foreign ministry issued a statement saying: “The resolution adoption in Parliament does not equate to interfering in Bangladesh’s internal matters.”
