Unknown culprits sued for Gopibagh murders

A case was filed against upto 12 anonymous assailants accusing them of murdering six, including a self-proclaimed Pir (religious and spiritual leader), in Dhaka's Gopibagh.

Abdullah Al Faruk, the youngest son of Lutfor Rahman, the self-proclaimed Pir, filed the case with Wari police at 11:30pm Saturday, during the night of the murder.

Wari police Sub-Inspector Zahidur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that the family blamed militants for the killing and suspected some of the Pir's disciples to have been involved.

Lutfor's wife Salma claimed that a lot of money was looted from the house, he added. Their son Faruk claimed his father was the commander in-chief of Imam Mahadi.

On Saturday, Lutfor Rahman, his eldest son and four other disciples were found slaughtered in a Gopibagh house in the capital.

The self-proclaimed Pir had reportedly been attacked by Islamic extremists in the past. Lutfor himself was arrested three times over his controversial religious views and statements.

However, the police have yet to find a motive behind the killing or the identities of any of the murderers.
