4th spell of blockade enters 3rd day

The fourth spell of the 72-hour countrywide road-rail-waterway blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, entered the third day Thursday. BNP-led 18-party alliance called the countrywide programme on the victory day and announced to observe it from 6am Tuesday to 6am Friday. BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan announced the blockade programme at a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office. The 2nd day of the blockade was largely peaceful on Wednesday. There was a no report of any major incident of violence across the country. Four persons were injured in crude bombs explosion in the night. The incident took place in Panthapath at about 8:15pm.

Earlier, two people were killed in Satkhira and Sirajganj on the first day of the protest programme on Tuesday. The opposition combined has already enforced 346 hours of road-rail-waterway blockade across the country in three spells — 71-hour, 131-hour and 144-hour ones — after the announcement of the election schedule for the 10th parliamentary elections that left at least 75 people dead. On November 25, the Chief Election Commissioner announced the election schedule fixing the balloting date for January 5.
