Bishwajit murder verdict at noon

The verdict of sensational Bishwajit Das murder will be delivered Wednesday noon, a year after Awami League supporters killed him in broad daylight.

Speedy Trials Tribunal 4 judge ABM Nizamul Haque set Wednesday the date for delivering the verdict.

The tribunal’s Public Prosecutor SM Rafiqul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that the court will begin delivering the verdict at 12 noon Wednesday.

Eight of the accused 21 Bangladesh Chhatra League activists are in prison facing murder charges. The remaining 13 are currently on the run.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nizamuddin Fakir said the arrestees were being kept at Dhaka Central Jail.

“They will be brought to the court around 11:30am,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.

Uttam Kumar Das, brother of murdered 21-year old tailor shop owner Bishwajit, were waiting for a “remarkable punishment” of the criminals.

Bishwajit Das was hacked to death in broad daylight during a blockade programme of 18-party alliance near Bahadur Shah Park on December 9, 2012.

Sutrapur police filed a murder case in this regard on the same day. On June 2, charges were framed against the 21 accused.

A petition of a pro-BNP lawyer pleading inclusion of police members in the case, who were present at scene during the murder, was rejected by the court.

The murder drew flack on then ruling Awami League and was one of the most hyped criticisms of the government during its five-year rule.

However, Awami League had claimed that the perpetrators of the crime were infiltrators into the Chhatra League Jagannath University unit.

Eight under arrest for the murder are Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, AHM Kibria, Quiyum Miah Tipu, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon, Saiful Islam, Emdadul Haque and Golam Mostafa.

The 13 absconding are Rajon Talukder, Monirul Haque Pavel, Rafiqul Islam, Md Alauddin, Obaidul Quader Tahsin, Imran Hossain, Khondoker Md Yunus Ali, Tarique Bin Zohor, Azizur Rahman, Noor-e-Alam Limon, Al Amin Sheikh, Mosharraf Hossain and Kamrul Hasan.

However, it was reported that some of the absconding were faring openly in the capital.
