Dhaka summons Pakistani envoy

Bangladesh summoned the Pakistani high commisioner after a resolution was passed in the Pakistani parliament over executed war criminal Abdul Quader Molla.

Foreign Ministry Secretary Mostafa Kamal was in a meeting with Mir Afrasiab Qureshi, the Pakistani high commissioner to Bangladesh, on Monday afternoon.

The move came after Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu condemned the Pakistani resolution and asked for its withdrawal and an apology for 1971.

Mir Afrasiab Koreshi entered the foreign ministry, located in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, around 5pm.

On Tuesday, the Pakistan National Assembly adopted a resolution expressing concern over Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla, who was executed for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

The resolution, moved by Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami member Sher Akbar Khan, was adopted by the parliament with a majority vote.

Minister Inu condemned this resolution. “The Pakistani authorities should withdraw the resolution. Minister (Pakistan) Nisar Ali Khan should also withdraw his comment.”

Pakistani Minister Nisar Ali Khan had said of Quader Molla was executed “for his loyalty to Pakistan” and the move was bound to open old wounds between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Pakistan have been active against the execution of Quader Molla since the war ciminal's execution on December 12.

Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami honoured Molla as a martyr. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former cricketer Imran Khan claimed Molla was innocent and the charges brought against him were false.
