2.5kg of gold seized, Dubai expatriate held

Another haul of gold, 21 bars weighing at 2.5 kilograms, was seized from a Dubai expatriate at Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday, one day after the authority held another expatriate with 1.2 kilograms of gold.

Identified as Mohammad Shahidullah,35, the Dubai expatriate was held along with the gold bars at the green channel area sometime around 3pm immediately after he had arrived in Dhaka from Dubai via a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.

Hailing from Feni, the detainee was working as a labourer in Dubai and the 21 gold bars were seized after his luggage was searched, said Kamrul Hasan, an assistant commissioner of the Customs Department at the airport.

“Acting on a tip-off, the customs officials had been keeping their eyes on him soon after he had arrived at Dhaka from the Bangladeshi flag carrying flight BG-0525”, said the Customs AC, adding: “When he was crossing the Green Channel area, his bag was searched and the gold bars were found inside it.”

The detained expatriate has been handed over to the Airport Police Station and a case was filed in this connection.

Earlier on Saturday morning, the Customs officials arrested another expatriate with nine bars and 34 gold chains.

Over 550 kilograms of gold was seized at the airport by the customs officials in last 11 months.
