At least three Shibir activists were killed in a clash that ensued between the activists of Jamaat-Shibir and members of police in the district's Purano Poil, Sunday afternoon.
Following the incident, the local administration imposed Section 144 in the area from 5pm Sunday to 6am Monday as the Shibir activists set a number of vehicles ablaze in Sadar upazila in the evening.
The deceased were identified as Firoz Hossain, Sakib and Insan Ali.
Joypurhat Sadar police station Officer-in-charge Abdur Rashid confirmed the news to the Dhaka Tribune.
Witnesses said Shibir activists torched the Krishi Bank branch in Purano Poil at around 4:30pm. Police successfully dispersed the Shibir activists.
Later, around 300 to 400 villagers, including Jamaat and Shibir activists, launched an attack on the law enforcers with bows and arrows.
Meanwhile police fired rubber bullets to pacify the situation that left three Shibir activists dead.
