The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its students wing Islami Chhatra Shibir torched two branch offices of Mercantile and Dutch Bangla banks in Alokar intersection area of the city on Wednesday night.
The Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession in New Market area around 8pm in support of blockade and hartal programmes.
Meanwhile, they hurled bricks on the roadside shops, creating panic amongst the people in the area.
At one stage, the Jamaat-Shibir men set fire on Mercantile and Dutch Bangla banks, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
On information, police rushed in and dispersed the Jamaat activists firing rubber bullets.
Fire fighters doused the flame in cooperation with locals, Boalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ziaur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
However, no casualties were reported till filing of this report at 9:48pm.
Later, the unruly Jamaat-Shibir members also vandalised the building of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce.
