Police were compelled to fire about 60 rounds of live gunfire when some hundreds of people attacked them in Narail Sadar upazila Wednesday morning.
At least 50, including eight policemen, were injured at scene. Among them, the condition of Narail Sadar Officer-in-Charge Mokter Hossain was critical.
Witnesses said the area turned into a battlefield with clashes persisting about one and half hour. At least 50 people, including policemen, were injured.
Law enforcers tried to break a blockade put up at Dumurtala intersection when some hundreds of people pounced on them, police said.
Police were compelled to fire 60 rounds of live gunfire at scene, Narail acting Superintendent ABM Nuruzzaman said. “The clashes pursued for more than an hour.”
Eight policemen, including Narail Sadar OC Mokter Hossain, was injured, he said. Mokter was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
However, it was not clear who attacked the policemen and why.
The incident took place during a nationwide blockade of the BNP-led 18-party alliance and amidst the pending execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla.
