Bangladesh awaits Molla review hearing

The hearing of the review petition of death-sentenced war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla began on Wednesday morning.

Court has been adjourned until 11:30am. The stay on the execution of Quader Molla will be effective until a directive issued from the Appellate bench.

Dhaka Tribune correspondent Udisa Islam is at the Supreme Court where the full bench of the Appellate Division was hearing the petition.

The Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hussain, took their seats at 9:55am, she reported.

A petition seeking an extension to the stay order and the review petition was produced at court.

Attorney General Mahbube Alam opposed the petition and sought not to extend the stay order on Quader Molla’s execution.

Later, the hearing of the review petition began at around 10:20am, Dhaka Tribune correspondent Nazmus Sakib reported from scene.

The court was adjourned until 11:30am after the defense counsel sought more time.

The hearing takes place after a nightlong drama over the execution of Quader Molla. The execution of Molla was stayed hours before it was carried out.

Junior Home Minister Shamsul Haque Tuku had announced that the execution of Quader Molla would take place a minute past Tuesday midnight.

However, after efforts from the counsel of the Jamaat leader, Chamber Judge Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed the execution order until 10:30pm Wednesday.

Now, what will happen of Quader Molla, will be known after directives are issued from this full bench of the Appellate Division.
