Spate of violence through Chittagong

Chittagong witnessed a spate of violence after the execution for war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla was announced Tuesday.

Two police stations came under attack late in the night. Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar road was blocked.

The security system throughout the district was beefed up with additional deployment of paramilitary force Border Guard Battalion (BGB).

Five vehicles were set on fire in city’s Muradpur intersection around 9:30pm, Chittagong Metropolitan Police Panchlaish circle Assistant Commissioner Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf said.

However, he could not elaborate on who committed the arson.

Local police sources informed of processions, crude bombs exploding and a stand-off with police through several areas of the city including Boropole, Baparipara, New Market, Andarkilla, Bakulia and Patharghata.

Similar violence were also reported from Fatikchhari and Sitakunda upazilas, this correspondent reported.

Twenty platoons of BGB has been deployed through Chittagong city and Sitakunda upazila each, CMP Additional Commissioner (crime and operations) Banoj Kumar Majumder said.

Miscreants attempted an attack Panchlaish Police Station at around 9:45pm, Assistant Commissioner Rouf said. “But police thwarted the attempt.”

Bandar police Officer-in-Charge said miscreants blasted five crude bombs near his police station around 10:30pm.

No one could be detained in either of the two incidents.

6 vehicles torched in Satkania

Six vehicles were set on fire and about 20 others were in Hashmater Dokan areain the upazila at night, Satkania police OC Abdul Latif said.

Police could not reach the spot since Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway was completely blocked, he said.
