Defence lawyers seek stay of Molla’s execution

Lawyers of the Jamaat-e-Islami defense counsel were running around seeking a stay to the execution of Abdul Quader Molla.

They met Chamber Judge Syed Mahmud Hossain at his Kakrail Judges’ Complex residence in Dhaka before scurrying off to Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.

Defence counsel chief Abdur Razzak, Tajul Islam and Khondoker Mahbub Hossain were in meeting with the chamber judge around 8:30pm.

Dhaka Tribune Correspondent Abu Bakar Siddique was reporting live updates from scene.

“We sought a stay to the execution of Quader Molla,” Abdur Razzak said after the meeting.

Chamber judge said a move of this magnitude would require a prior notification with the attorney general, he said. “We called the Attorney General but could not reach him.”

“We are now going to see him in person and then come back later and see the chamber judge,” he said.
