Policemen among 5 injured in Rajshahi clash

At least five people, including two policemen, were injured when opposition supporters locked in clashes with law enforcers in Rajshahi city on Monday.

The incident took place during a nationwide blocakde of the BNP-led 18-party alliance and a nationwide shutdown of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Witnesses said opposition supporters brought out a procession and tried to block a road in Shalbagan area around 9:30am.

They pelted brickbats when police chased at them. Police said they fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to break the blockade.

Two policemen were injured at scene, Boalia police Assistant Commissioner Saifur Rahman said. However, identities could not be confirmed immediately.

Local opposition sources said at least three of their activists were injured at scene. However, no one could be nabbed from scene.

Jamaat has called a nationwide hartal for Monday protesting the death warrant against their Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla.
