OSD officers seek opportunity of polls-time cabinet

Officers on Special Duty, and some other civil servants on probation, were seeking to make an opportunity of the polls-time cabinet on Sunday.

Usually, a transfer to the OSD unit is considered a punishment for civil servants. Officers made OSD are left without work or even a desk but they draw a salary at the end of the month.

These officers spend time reading and gossiping at the library of the public administration ministry on most days.

A group of OSD officers had crowded the public administration ministry seeking transfer or promotion in the morning for the opportunity of an interim cabinet.

They took up matters to the secretary of the ministry claiming they were wrongly made OSD and now they want a change to their status.

Public administration ministry Senior Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder said this decision was not his to make but that of the government's.

Later, additional police forces were deployed near the public administration ministry in order to avoid any untoward incidents.

“We have been OSD for the past seven years,” a Joint Secretary Tapan Majumder said. “Now we think that the polls-time cabinet can change things.”

“Now police are not allowing us to enter,” he said.

Among those present in the gathered crowd were Brijon Kanti Sarker and Abdul Bari.
