Separate daylong hartals enforced by the BNP and the 18-party alliance passed off on Sunday almost peacefully in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Dinajpur districts and four upazilas of Sylhet.
In Chittagong, a chase and counter-chase took place between hartal supporters and police in Bahaddarhat area of the city around 8am.
Three people were arrested from the area.
The opposition activists also clashed with police in AK Khan road, Colonel Hat and Sagorikas area of the city in the morning.
Meanwhile, the opposition men halted the train service by putting barricade on the rail tracks in Ispahani area of Pahartali in the morning.
Train communications between Chittagong and Dhaka and Sylhet remained halted from 7am.
Local BNP called the dawn-to-dusk shutdown in the district protesting the arrest of BNP leaders, including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin and BNP central organising secretary Ghulam Akbar Khandakar.
Police arrested Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin from in front of Shah Amanat International Airport Thursday night while seven BNP leaders, including Ghulam Akbar Khandakar, from Kazir Deori area on Thursday morning.
In Cox’s Bazar, hartal was observed peacefully as no incidence of violence was reported in the early hours of hartal.
No long-route bus left the town in the morning.
Additional law enforcers were deployed in the town to avoid any untoward situation.
The main opposition on Thursday night called a daylong hartal in the district protesting the killing of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal leader Abdul Halim in police beating.
In Dinajpur, Hartal supporters brought out a procession in the town in the morning and set fire on the road in Jalroad area.
Later, police doused the fire.
Shops and educational institutions remained closed in the town.
The BNP-led 18-party combine on Friday called a daylong hartal in the district protesting the Thursday’s attack on the alliance men.
At least 50 people were injured as the opposition men clashed with the cops and the ruling party activists in the Government College intersection on Thursday noon.
In Sylhet, a daylong hartal in Dakshin Surma, Companyganj, Jointapur and Gowainghat upazilas, called by 18-party alliance protesting Thursday’s police attack on party men, progressed peacefully on Sunday.
Matiur Rahman Dudu, vice-president of Dakhkhin Surma unit BNP, announced the shutdown in the upazila at a rally in the upazila headquarters Friday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Dildar Hossain Selim, vice-president of district unit BNP, called the daylong hartal in Companyganj, Jointapur and Gowainghat upazilas.
Besides, a 36-hour shutdown, called by BNP, in Bogra district demanding inclusion of BNP leaders, including its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, in the voter list, was withdrawn on Sunday because of the 72-hour blockade of the opposition alliance.
