Jubo Dal leader beaten to death in Patia

A leader of the district's Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, youth affiliate of main opposition BNP, was beaten to death in Patia upazila of Chittagong, early on Sunday.

The incident occurred during a nationwide blockade programme of the BNP-led oppostiion 18-party alliance amidst on-going political violence in the country.

The BNP's local unit called in a daylong hartal in Patia upazila for Monday in protest of the death.

Abdul Gafur, 45, son of late Abdur Rashid from the upazila, was attacked by miscreants while on his way home in Muzafurabad area, Patia police Officer-in-Charge Mafiz Uddin said.

He succumbed to his injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) sometime around 5am, CMCH police outpost Sub-Inspector Jahirul Islam said.

OC Mafiz Uddin said four individuals were detained over the death.

Patia upazila BNP leader Idris Mia claimed that Awami League activists were behind the killing.

Dakhin Zila BNP general secretary and Patia upazila member of parliament Shahzahan Juel called the daylong hartal in the district for Monday to protest the death.
