A group of youths began a 48-hours sit-in-fast programme at Shahbag, Dhaka demanding an end to political violence in Bangladesh.
The banner ‘Jagroto Jonota’, claimed as non-political, demanded that no innocent people become victim of the on-going pre-polls violence in the country.
“We have been to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and saw the burn victims,” said an organizer Zakia Moon, a doctor herself at Bangladesh Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
“The agony of the victims and their families are unbearable. This prompted us to put up a demonstration,” she said.
On Thursday, a passenger bus was set on fire during a blockade programme of the BNP-led opposition 18-party alliance.
Two, among the 19 burnt victims, died and the others, which included a journalist and a lawyer, were attending treatments at DMCH.
“They can fight all they want,” Nusrat said referring to the political parties. “But, the innocent people have to be spared.”
“We will go into tougher actions if they pay no heed to us,” she added.
About a hundred people died through October and November amidst the violence arising between Awami League and BNP over how the elections will take place.
Awami League were in full swing for elections which have been slated for January 5. They have given out nomination tickets to party aspirants for the polls.
BNP, on the other hand, rebutted and continued agitation with programmes like shutdowns and blockades.
