A Pakistani national was arrested by the customs officials at Shahjalal International Airport yesterday with around 15m Indian rupees.
Md Imtiyaz Alam of Karachi was arrested around 6:30am after he arrived at the airport on an Etihad Airlines flight from Abu Dhabi, said customs officials.
Zakiya Sultana, commissioner of the customs department, said: “Acting on a tip-off, we watched his movement. When he crossed the green channel, we found Rs14.47m in his luggage. The amount was mostly in Rs1,000 notes.”
She said they were yet to know Imtiyaz’s destination.
Kamrul Hasan, assistant commissioner of customs, said they were not yet sure if the Indian rupees were fake or real.
He said: “We suspect that the currencies were destined for India through the land border.”
The detained Pakistani was handed over to Airport police station and a case was filed in this connection, he added.
