Detectives on Thursday arrested a Jamaat-e-Islami leader for the sectarian violence in Cox's Bazar's Ramu.
Banderban's Nakhiyangchhari upazila chairman and Jamaat leader Tofail Ahmed was arrested at around 1pm a year after the violence.
Cox's Bazar detective police Officer-in-Charge Manzurul Alam said Tofail was arrested from his chairman office in Nakhiyangchhari upazila.
The Jamaat leader has multiple cases against him including arson on a Buddhist monastery, the OC said. “Tofail also has cases against him accusing involvement in hartal and blockade violence.”
He was taken to Cox's Bazar detective police office.
Tofail's wife Jesmin Akhter said the cases were a conspiracy against her husband and politically motivated. “He is out in bail in all those cases.”
“The last bail he secured from a higher court was on November 20. We have sent all relevant bail papers to the concerned officials.”
Tofail is said to have joined office after the papers were sent to the authorities, she added.
Cox's Bazar Ramu police OC Appela Raju Naha said a total of eight cases were filed into the September 29 attack on the Buddhist community. However the official could not confirm how many of those cases implicated Tofail.
Tofail Ahmed went in hiding after reports tied him to the sectarian Ramu violence soon after incident in 2012.
