Shibir men torch vehicle in Noakhali

Jamaat-Shibir activists torched vehicle in Noakhali in sadar upazila after police detained 13 pickets in the area on Thursday morning.

A police team conducted a drive and detained 13 pickets from the Municipality market and Dutterhat areas, suspecting them of picketing after some rickshaws were vandalised in the area around 9:30am.

Sadar police station Officer-in-charge Mosharraf Hossain Torofdar informed the Dhaka Tribune of the detention.

Following the detention, Jamaat-Shibir pickets torched a van of Department of Narcotics Control at around 12pm, police super Anisur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune.

Fire spread in the area when the gas cylinder of the DB police van exploded after the businessmen set it on fire.

Firefighters from Maijdee fire service rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after 30 minutes.

Later, police fired several rounds bullets to disperse the crowd.

Locals sources had earlier claimed that businessmen had set the vehicle on fire but later Police Super Anisur Rahman confirmed that the businessmen were not involved in the incident.
