5 die on 2nd day of 48-hour blockade

At least five people were killed in Sirajganj, Chittagong, Satkhira and Gazipur districts on Wednesday, the second day of the 48-hour blockade.

In Sirajganj, two BNP supporters died during tripartite clashes between blockade supporters, Awami League activists and police in Belcucci upazila on Wednesday.

The deceased were preliminarily identified as MasumBillah, 42, and Abdul Jalil, 40, both supporters of BNP, police said.

Witnesses said BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters brought out a procession in Mukundagati Bazar sometime around 1:30am. Belcucci police Officer-in-charge Abdul Hai said the duo was hacked to death during the chaos. He did not elaborate any further.

In Chittagong, pickets chased a driver to his death on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was preliminarily identified as Mohammad Ershad, 22.

The driver was killed when his tempo got upturned while being chased by pickets in Moizzartekat around 1:15pm, police said.

Patia circle police Additional Superintendent Shamim Hossain and Chittagong Medical College Hospital outpost Sub-Inspector Zahirul Islam endorsed the information.

This raises the death toll during the 48-hour opposition blockade to ten until Wednesday afternoon.

In Satkhira, an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was shot dead at Shealdanga village in Sadarupazila, early Wednesday.

Shamsur Rahman, 35, son of Abdul Majid, was shot dead and several people injured in a clash with law enforcers.

The clash ensued when a joint team of police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) launched a drive in

Shealdanga village at about 4:00am to detain someJamaat-Shibir men in connection withcases of violence, said EnamulHaque, officer-in-Charge of SatkhiraSadar Police Station.

Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday called in a half-day hartal for Thursday in the district protesting the killing in Sadarupazila. Satkhira district unit Jamaat Ameer Abdul KhalekMandal told reporters that they will enforce the half-day hartal in the district protesting the killing of Shamsur Rahman.

In Gazipur, a local Awami League leader was killed and nine others were injured in a clash with BNP at Chupair area under Kaligonjupazila in Gazipur on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Kamal Hossain, 40, a Union Parishad Member of ward No-3 of Jamalpur Union and local leader of Awami League.

Assistant Superintendent of police (Kaliganj circle) said: “Activists of BNP and its alliance parties gathered at Chupair area as a part of their blockade programme around 1:30pm.”

BNP activists locked into a clash with the Awami League activists, leaving 10 people injured, when the latter tried to the former.

Sources said Kamal was rushed to the hospital in critical condition before he succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Jamalpur Union Chhatra League President Junayed was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while the other injured were admitted to KaligonjUpazila health complex.

Besides, some eight to 10 shops were set on fire at Dalaner Bazar.
