Police open fire in Noakhali, 5 shot

 

At least five, including a school teacher, were shot when police opened fire during a stand-off with pickets in Noakhali Sadar on Wednesday.

A police Superintendent was injured when crude bombs were hurled by pickets hours afterwards.

The incidents took place during the 48-hour nationwide blockade called in by the BNP-led opposition 18-party alliance.

Noakhali Sadar police Officer-in-Charge Mosharraf Hossain Tarafdar and district SP Anisur Rahman confirmed the incidents.

Police opened fire while trying to remove a blockade placed on Dhaka-Sonapur highway in Bishhanath at around 1:30pm, this Dhaka Tribune correspondent reported from the scene.

Pickets also hurled crude bombs at police during this time, he added.

He found out of the five injured while Noakhali Sadar OC confirmed the live gunfire.

The injured were: Ishaque Mia, BNP leader Mohammad Masud, Islami Chhatra Shibir activists Rabbi, Farhad and Nazrul Islam.

Meanwhile, SP Anisur Rahman himself said that he fell prey to a crude bomb that was hurled at municipality bazar.

On the other hand, 12 opposition activists were held from Maijdee town, the SP said.

Law enforcers, including paramilitary Border Guard Battalion (BGB), were deployed through town.
