Zafar-Yasmeen back, integrated ad test on

Eminent educationist and writer Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and his wife Dr Yasmeen Haque, also a physics professor, withdrew their resignation letters on Wednesday.

They made the decision as the university authority has agreed to hold the admission tests according to its integrated system.

The decision of holding the admission tests by the integrated process resulted from a latest meeting of academic council at around 11am.

The academic council decided to suspend the admission tests that were scheduled to be held on November 30. The date of the examination will be announced soon.

The meeting ended around 2:45pm and the Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Aminul Haque Bhuiyan fed Zafar Iqbal and Yesmeen Haque sweets.

Later, Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, his wife Dr Yasmeen Haque and the VC briefed the students on the campus.

Earlier in the day, the students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) laid siege outside the university's registrar building to press home their four-point demand, including keeping Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Dr Yesmeen Haque on their posts and holding admission tests by the integrated process.

They laid the siege around 9am and stayed there till the final decision came.

Earlier on Tuesday, they submitted their resignations after a meeting which decided to postpone the integrated admission tests agreed recently between the SUST and Jessore Science and Technology University (JSTU), a cause Prof Iqbal has strongly been advocating for.

The examination committee had been preparing for the combined admission tests the past few months. However, last week, a group called “Sylhetbashi” protested against the proposed system claiming that it would be unjust towards the people of Sylhet.

University authorities on Monday sat with distinguished individuals of the city to discuss the matter, and on Thursday decided to postpone the tests.
