A group of Jamaat-Shibir activists swooped on a police outpost at Gazirhat Goranbaria area of Debhata, Gaibandha 7pm last evening, while police in reply opened fire.
Witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession and attacked the outpost by exploding a several handmade crude bombs at the spot.
Debhata upazila Jamaat Secretary Nur Mohammad said police arrested Jamaat activist Mohidul from Goranbaria. As Jamaat activists tried to snatch him away from custody, police fired at them.
He claimed that some of the members had sustained injury, however, he could not confirm their identities.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-Shibir continued attacking the police with cocktails at Gazirhat area on the Satkhira-Kaliganj road. In the attack, several power poles were damaged, disrupting the power supply in 20-25 villages. Vehicular movement on the highway was also disrupted.
Panic spread through Nalta of Kaliganj upazila as Jamaat-Shibir also brought out a procession there.
Satkhira Kaliganj Circle Assistant Police Superintendent said, police did not have any other way than opening fire as the Jamaat-Shibir activists threw crude bombs at them. 60-65 rounds bullets were fired, however, there was no news of anyone getting hurt, he said.
