Economist blog: Compromise possible between parties

The Economist, in a recent blog post on the current political situation of Bangladesh, has said a compromise between the two parties was possible given the recent acquittal of Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case.

“A compromise may be possible. Tarique Rahman, Mrs Zia’s eldest son and heir apparent, has been acquitted in a case of money laundering. That decision could ease some of the tension between the country’s two leading ladies,” read a blog post on the website of the London-based weekly.

The analysis however questioned the independence of the judiciary, claiming the lines between judiciary and politicians to be “dangerously blurry,” by mentioning the recent submission of applications by four war crimes trial prosecutors for Awami League candidature in the upcoming polls.

The blog post also predicted that if the elections took place on schedule, the BNP would “appear strongly placed,” adding that “threats of electoral violence” would probably help the opposition as a low turnout would negatively affect the Awami League.

The analysis concluded: “If the evidence mounts in favour of the BNP it may yet blink and decide to take part in January.”
