NY Times editorial blames Hasina

The New York Times in an Editorial stated that Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appears “determined to hang on to power” ahead of upcoming elections.

It has also called on Sheikh Hasina to work with the opposition to find a smooth transition into next year’s elections, alongside urging her to restore an independent judiciary and putting an end to persecution of human rights activists. “Prime Minister Hasina needs to restore autonomy to Bangladesh’s judiciary, stop persecuting human rights activists and work with the political opposition to find an acceptable transitional government ahead of next year’s election,” the editorial read. “If violations of rights continue, Bangladesh could face pressure, including perhaps sanctions, from the international community.” The editorial was released on the same day as the premier announced probable termination of current session of Jatiya Shangshad, adding that President Abdul Hamid has “permitted” her to lead the polls-time government.
