Jamaat rampage halts traffic on Dhaka-Ctg highway

Local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists went on a rampage on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sitakunda upazila of the Chittagong district after the death of a leader, halting the vehicular movement in the area since Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Jamaat’s Barab Kunda union unit General Sectary Aminul Islam.

Local Jamaat activists claimed that local Awami League activists and police killed Aminul, who went missing three days ago. However, police denied the allegations.

Later, following the death, Jamaat members went on the rampage and torched three trucks while vandalising 10-15 vehicles along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the afternoon. The vehicular movement in the highway remain halted since 3pm because of the berserk.

Local Jamaat, in a statement signed by Jamaat Chittagong Metropolitan Publicity Secretary Mohammadullah, claimed that people in plain clothes identifying as law enforcers picked up Aminul from Comilla’s Choddogram on Sunday night.

His bullet-ridden body was later recovered from the city’s Shekerpara at 1:30pm on Wednesday.

They also alleged that local Awami League leaders and police were involved in this “killing”.

However, Chittagong Range Additional Superintendent of Police (North zone) Mohammad Sohidullah denied the allegation saying: “Aminul, the Jamaat leader, was not picked up by law enforcers.”
