Washington wants a peaceful transition of power from one government to another in the upcoming election in Bangladesh.
Inclusive and credible elections in the eyes of Bangladeshi people are the two other issues that US attached more importance to, said diplomatic sources.
“US State Department Assistant Secretary Nisha Desai in her meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave the message,” said a diplomat.
The assistant secretary arrived in the city on Saturday on a three-day trip which took place before she had the ceremonial swearing-in.
She met the prime minister, Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia and Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus on Sunday.
In response to Nisha’s “inclusive” election suggestion the prime minister said the assistant secretary was scheduled to meet Khaleda Zia later and she could raise the issue with the BNP chairperson, the diplomat said.
When she underscored the need for dialogue between the two major parties the prime minister said BNP
secretary general had the phone number of Awami League general secretary and the BNP leader could call him anytime.
In the press briefing on Monday Nisha categorically said: “We are not invested in any particular outcome but we strongly support the democratic process that leads to peaceful, free, fair and credible election.”
