Locals stage demo protesting ‘wrong treatment’

Locals staged a demonstration at the Gabindaganj upazila in Gaibandha on Monday; demanding exemplary punishment of a quack who they said provided ‘wrong treatment’ to a housewife.

A tense situation has been prevailing in the locality since the death of Anu Rani, 40, wife of Bablu Mohanta, from Barna village under the Kamardaha union of the upazila on November 12.

Local people said Anu Rani had gone to the quack for the surgical removal of a tumor under her waist on November 12.

Then, quack Indrazit conducted the operation on that day without any diagnosis and later released the patient.

Nevertheless, the patient died on her way home due to excessive bleeding from the incision.

Soon after the incident, quack Indrazit went into hiding to avoid the locals’ antagonism.

The agitators said the quack was responsible for the death as he conducted the operation without having any academic certificate in this regard.

Bablu Mohanta, the victim’s husband, said severe bleeding had been taking place as the quack cut a part of her rectum when operating on her tumor.

Abdul Hamid, a social worker of the area, said the quack was trying to compromise the matter by providing a good amount of money to the victim’s family so that they would not file a case against him.

Despite repeated attempts, Indrazit could not be reached as his mobile phone has remained switched off.
