Secretary: New ministers undecided

Invitations have been issued to those on the short-list to join the new polls-time administration, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said.

Speaking to reporters on Monday morning, he also said that the final decision on the composition of the new cabinet has not been taken.

“We have made phone calls to all the probable individuals. But it is not clear who will come,” he said. “The cabinet will be reshuffled after the new ministers’ swear-in.”

The official did not elaborate any further, other than to say the revelations in the media are misleading and embarrassing.

However he said that the resignation letters of the current ministers were still with the prime minister and will be handed over to the president after oath-taking.

The resignation of the previous cabinet ministers will be effective once their letters reach the president.

President Abdul Hamid will administer the oath-taking ceremony for new ministers at 3pm Monday.

It was still uncertain whether Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will remain in the cabinet, or who will head the polls-time interim government.

The new cabinet is apparently being formed without the approval of the main opposition BNP who termed the move “illegal and a farce.”

The BNP ruled out possibility of participating in “farcical elections” and is expected to announce a shutdown over the issue.
