The half-day hartal called by Jatiyabadi Chhatra Dal in Gaibandha is underway amidst sporadic blasts and flash processions.
Witnesses said at least 15 handmade bombs exploded at several places in the town, during the morning particularly the DB road.
Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the main opposition BNP, brought out a flash pro-hartal procession on the DB road at around 9:30am.
Police were said to have fired rubber bullets to break up the procession.
Motorized vehicles were not plying their trade in the town as almost all of the long route buses were grounded.
The shutdown was called in protest at the arrest of Chhatra Dal central committee General Secretary Habibur Rashid Habib.
District unit convenor of Chhatra Dal, Atik Hasan Rony, called the shutdown on Sunday evening.
