A drug addicted youth hacked a schoolgirl to death and severely injured four others at Dakkhin-Pashchim Para under Batajor union in Barisal district’s Gournadi, Sunday morning.
The deceased was one Tania, 11, daughter of Alamgir Sardar of the same area and a class-IV student in a local primary school.
The injured are Tania’s six-month old sister Marufa, Her mother Hasi Begum, 20, Annya, 4, the killer’s niece and Manir Sardar, 11, a schoolboy.
Hasi and Marufa were admitted at Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital while Manir and Annya at the Upazila Health Complex.
Batajor union chairman Aktar Hossain Babul informed: Nayon Bala [20] became angry with his family members as they refused to give him money and proceeded to hack away at his niece Annya at around 8am, leaving her critically injured.
Later, when the family members tried to catch him, he ran outside the house and started hacking towards whoever came in front of him, leaving Tania dead on the spot and injuring three others.
Finally, locals managed to detain him along with his family members and subjected him to a mass beating.
Later, they were handed over to police.
The UP chairman said Nayon is a known drug addicted youth and there is no issue of rivalry or communal sentiment behind the incident.
Gournadi police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam said: “Police arranged for the treatment of the injured victims and sent Tania’s body to Barisal SBMCH morgue for autopsy.”
High official of police and administration visited the scene and Special Forces were deployed in the area to maintain law and order, said AKM Ehsan Ullah, district police superintendent. Tania’s father was making preparations to file a murder case till the filing of this report at around 6pm.
