A father distressed over his daughter’s rape allegedly committed suicide by taking poison on Wednesday night at Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong.
Police said the deceased was a 40-year-old day labourer from Tripura Para in the upazila’s Uttar Talbaria area.
Abdul Alim Sheikh, assistant sub-inspector of Mirsarai police station, said the man’s 15-year-old daughter was raped near their house by two assailants on Tuesday night. The girl later informed her family about the assault.
Police arrested Alauddin, 21 and Joynal Abedin, 25, from the area that night, the officer said. The victim has filed a case accusing the two suspects of rape, he added.
Meanwhile, family sources said the father, who had been suffering from mental stress since the rape incident, was found in his room in a critical condition around 9pm on Wednesday. He was rushed to the upazila heath complex, where on-duty doctors declared him dead. He had reportedly ingested poison.
Police sent the body to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy and filed a case of unnatural death.
