Supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami beat a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader to death in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha on Thursday.
Khalilur Rahman, a hall president of Rajshahi University’s (RU) unit of Chhatra League, and a student of folklore at RU, was attacked in Domerhat Bazar around 5mp, police said.
Police Additional Superintendent Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the death.
Locals said he was in the area to seek blessing from his parents after being selected for the job as a sub inspector in Bangladesh Police.
He was mauled at with iron rods before locals rushed him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition, witnesses said.
The deceased’s father, Angur Miah, said his son had sustained critical injuries on his head and other parts of the body.
Gaibandha police Superintendent M. Shajid Hussain confirmed the incident and said the concerned police officials were given instructions to take lawful actions.
The police official, family of the victim and the locals said the act was committed by local Jamaat-e-Islami supporters.
Later local Chhatra League supporters wreaked havoc in the area protesting the death, witnesses said.
A resident of the locality, Afsar Ali, said at least 10 shops were torched, 20 vandalised and two motorcycles were set on fire in the area.
