In the latest development, owners of garment factories in the Ashulia Zone have decided to keep their factories open today.
The decision came after The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) leaders last night accepted the government-proposed minimum wage of Tk5,300 for the garments workers.
Earlier, the factory owners decided to keep all factories in the area closed for Thursday as as many factories in the area were vandalised during the recent worker unrest. All factories in the zone remained closed on Wednesday for security reasons.
Workers of various RMG factories across the country, including those in Ashulia, Narayanganj and Dhaka city, have been staging protests for over a year, demanding a raise in their minimum wage.
On July 6 of this year, a six-member minimum wage board was formed to re-fix the wage. On November 4, the minimum wage board recommended a minimum wage of Tk5,300.
