Transport strike in northern region called off

The 24-hour transport strike in the country’s northern region has been withdrawn on Thursday.

The leaders of Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation on Thursday morning decided to call off the transport strike considering people's sufferings.

Earlier on Wednesday, the organisation announced the programme demanding the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s special assistant Shimul Biswas. The strike began at around 6pm.

On a similar note, Bogra Paribahan Sramik Organisation sources said the strike will be enforced from 6pm Wednesday to 6am Thursday.

Earlier on November 10, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation called in a 72-hour transport strike in Rajshahi division, starting from Thursday.

Shimul Biswas was picked up along with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo from outside Khaleda’s Gulshan-2 house on Friday night, hours after BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Miah were arrested. Later, they were sent to jail.
