ACC drops DC Nazrul from extortion case

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday filed a case against two police officials and dropped the name of Detective Branch Deputy Commissioner Mollah Nazrul Islam for their alleged involvement in extorting Tk10m.

Earlier in the day, ACC Deputy Director Nasim Anwar filed the case with Ramna police station against two police officials, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumer Bhattacharya told reporters.

They are DB Sub-Inspector Abul Hasnat (suspended) and Bangshal police station SI Mohammad Jewel Mia (suspended).

An ACC official told the Dhaka Tribune that the name of Mollah Nazrul has been dropped from the case, as the probe body could not find any evidence against him.

The probe body of the case has taken statements from all the authorities concerned and after reviewing the statements, the case was filed against the two officials, said the ACC official.

The official informed that the probe body has collected lists of mobile phone calls of Mollah Nazrul and checked the video footage of the extortion collection. However, it could not find his involvement.

Allegation raised that Mollah Nazrul Islam picked up a businessman, Syed Abidul Islam, from Gulshan on April 7 and allegedly extorted Tk10m by threatening to kill him in crossfire.

Following the incident, Kabirul Haque, a relative of the victim, and a ruling party lawmaker from Narail 1 constituency, filed complaints with the home ministry and police headquarters against Nazrul.

Following allegations, the commission in July formed a body to investigate the matter.
