Two were killed and four more were injured when a truck fell prey to pickets and plunged off the road in Bogra's Sherpur upazila early on Wednesday.
The incident took place during an 84-hour nationwide hartal of the BNP-led opposition 18-party alliance.
The injured driver testified to the incident. However, police denied any connection of the accident to hartal.
The deceased were identified as Ziaur Rahman, 32, the owner of the truck, and Asadul Rahman, 32, a vegetable trader.
Driver Nazrul Islam said he was near Aminpur at around 1am when he saw that pickets set a fire on the road. “They began pelting stones. I was hit and lost control.”
Abul Kalam, another passenger of the truck, confirmed the incident and added that there were six people on the truck including the driver.
Sherpur police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Aminul Islam said: “The highway is a hotspot for crimes and attacks on vehicles, but this incident is not related to hartal.”
Driver Nazrul Islam was admitted to Sherpur Health Clinic, while the three other injured were taken to Bogra. The bodies were being kept at Sherpur police station.
