Bribery charges against former Detective Branch deputy commissioner Mollah Nazrul Islam were dropped on Tuesday, an Anti-Corruption Commission official said.
An official inquiry found no evidence of his involvement with the Tk10m bribery attempt, he added.
The commission, however, approved a decision to file a bribery case against two other police officials - suspended DB SI Abul Hasnat and Bangshal police station SI Mohammad Jewel Mia.
The case will be filed with the Ramna police station soon, the official said.
According to the previous allegation, Mollah Nazrul and his associates took bribe amounting to Tk10m from businessman Syed Abidul Islam on April 7, threatening to kill him in a “crossfire.”
However, the probe body collected statements from all involved, lists of mobile phone calls of Mollah Nazrul and the video footage of the extortion.
After reviewing all evidence, the body requested ACC to approve filing a bribery case.
Meanwhile, the official said, there are allegations against Nazrul of persuading the businessman to withdraw charges against him.
“He is one of the junior fellows in my locality. He agreed that it was a mistake on Nazrul’s part and mistakes happen,” Awami League MP Kabirul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune last week.
ACC formed the probe body in July to investigate into the charges.
