Around 100 injured on 2nd day of hartal

The second day of the 84-hour countrywide shutdown enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance passed with stray incidents of violence leaving around 100 people injured while pickets set fire to many vehicles and vandalised many, alongside exploding crude bombs sporadically in capital and elsewhere in the country.

Among the injured, around 10 people sustained burn injuries when pickets set vehicles on fire and hurled crude bombs and petrol bombs at them while railway track were uprooted in Benapole as part of obstructing railway communication.

Police arrested around 100 pickets and recovered around 200 bombs from different places. Around 200 bombs exploded all over country on Monday.

At least seven people sustained burn wounds when pickets hurled crude bombs and petrol bombs and set several vehicles on fire in capital’s Gulistan, New Market, Uttara and Pallabi area.

A pick-up van driver Sumon, 20, sustained burn injuries when his vehicle was set on fire pouring petrol in New Market area, a passenger of a bus, Sagar, 20, was burnt when a bus was set to fire in Kalshi of Pallabi.

In Rajbari, launch movement was choked on Daultdia-Paturia river route by the pickets, who also hindered ferry movement resulting in long queue on Dhaka-Khulna highway.

In Chittagong, four vehicles were set on fire and five bombs exploded in Sitakunda and Kazir Dewri areas. Police picked up seven pickets while trying to vendalise vehicles.

In Narsingdi, at least 20 BNP leaders and workers were injured in a clash on Dhaka-Sylhet highway. Policed arrested eight of them.

In Chandpur, a clash left at least 10 people injured around 11am when 14 pickets were arrested.

Pickets blasted at least 15 crude bombs in Laxmipur district town.

In Satkhira, at least four bombs were exploded on Bhomra Land Port.

In Gazipur, a taxicab and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were set on fire and three other vehicles and several business shops vandalised. 13 were arrested.

A police van was vandalised at Nimtala bus stand in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah.

In Barisal, pickets damaged a garbage collection truck of Barisal City Corporation.

In Natore, two people were injured as a truck overturned and fell into a roadside ditch after being chased by pro-hartal pickets in the early morning near Ahmedpur Bazar of Boraigram upazila. The pro-hartal activists also blocked Dhaka-Natore highway in the morning.
