Two leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, of Rajshahi University were injured on Monday in a factional clash, centring extortion from a student on campus.
The injured are RU unit BCL Vice-President Atikur Rahman Atik and Organizing Secretary Kawsar Ahmed Koushik, who took primary treatment from the university medical centre.
Witnesses said a group of BCL leaders and activists led by Sudipta Salam, former joint secretary of BCL RU unit, went to the Shahidullah Arts Building premises around 2pm and got engaged in an altercation with Atik and Koushik over extorting a student.
At one stage, Salam and his followers beat up Atik and Koushik, leaving them injured.
On information, police and other BCL leaders rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Contacted, Salam alleged that Atik extorted money and a mobile set from a student familiar to him few days ago and the clash ensued over the incident.
BCL RU unit President Mizanur Rahman Rana told the Dhaka Tribune that the incident ensued from mere a misunderstanding, adding he had settled the problem.
