At least 20 houses of and shops run by local Hindus were vandalised in the Bangram Bazar area of Ataikula upazila, Pabna, Saturday afternoon.
At around 12:30pm, locals torched the house of class-X student Rajib Saha and vandalised some 20 houses.
The incident stemmed from a rumour that Rajib Saha made a post on Facebook which demeaned the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh).
Police said the mob also blockaded the Pabna-Nagarbari highway from 2pm till 4pm.
Meanwhile, Pabna Deputy Commissioner Ashrafuddin Ahmed and Superintendent of Police (SP) Minajuddin Ahmed visited the spot.
SP Minajuddin said: “We are investigating the matter to find out what exactly instigated the incident.”
“Legal action will be taken against the culprits after investigation,” he said.
